some extras…

Robert Alexander BOYD was a “forgeman” and later a farmer, which means that he worked at one of the many iron forges that his part of northwestern New Jersey was famous for. He was most likely born in Canistear, which was a very small settlement in part of Vernon Township, Sussex County NJ. Canistear and many of the neighboring villages came into existence because of the local iron mines and forges, such as the Canistear Bloomery. The NJ iron industry boomed during the Revolution, declined after the War of 1812, picked up again slightly during the Civil War, and then declined permanently after that.

Emeline BARTON BOYD worked as a house servant in John Brown’s hotel in Newfoundland, NJ. This part of New Jersey was known for beautiful lakes and forests, and was a summer resort area. Maybe Emeline was good at her job, because in 1882 W.W. Munsell (from “The History of Morris County, New Jersey”) said the hotel was “excellently kept”  :)

Did Emeline and Robert Alexander get divorced? The 1880 US Federal Census for Vernon Township, Sussex County shows Robert Alexander BOYD living by himself, and says he’s “single” and “divorced”. The same census for Jefferson Township, Morris County shows Emeline BOYD living as a servant in the hotel she works in, but says she’s “married”.

Stockholm New Jersey was called Snufftown in earlier times.
